This Easter, I had the privilege of being asked to create an installation for the Cross at New City East Lake for their Easter season. A year ago, a friend and I were reading through Revelation and talking about how absurd and difficult to comprehend most of its imagery was. We read through chapter 21, where the New Jerusalem that God has prepared for His people is described, with its gates of pearl, transparent gold, jasper walls and foundations of gem stones. I had never heard of most of them. Naturally, we googled them all and were amazed at how shockingly beautiful they all were.
For Easter, I think that these paintings are helpful in meditation on celebrating the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. Advent looks forward to His coming. Christmas celebrates his arrival. Lent mourns his death. Easter celebrates the Resurrection and the hope of the coming Kingdom, where God dwells face to face and His city is made out of whacky cool stones.
